Toilet training is a significant milestone in a child’s development, and is just one of your child’s daily routines. It’s a skill that plays an essential role in their autonomy, dignity, and comfort. At BCOTB, we understand that every child’s learning journey is unique, which is why our toilet training program is specifically designed to teach children how to be independent in using the bathroom, regardless of their environment. Whether your child is already enrolled at BCOTB or you’re considering enrolling them in our programs, we’re here to help make this important process as smooth as possible.
How does BCOTB’s Toilet Training Program stand out?
Our toilet training program isn’t just a one-size-fits-all approach. We tailor our methods to suit each individual child, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and confidence needed to navigate the bathroom independently. The program focuses on teaching children to respond to their own needs instead of relying on external cues, such as timers or prompts.
Our method emphasizes self-awareness and autonomy. We need children to be able to identify when they need to use the bathroom and request to go on their own. This teaches them responsibility, builds their confidence, and helps them feel more in control of their day-to-day activities. Independent usage of the toilet is essential for the comfort and stability of each learner.
A Comprehensive, 36-Hour Program
Our toilet training program is typically structured around 36 hours in total. This duration is carefully planned to allow ample time for children to become familiar with the process, develop confidence, and reinforce their skills with consistent practice. The program includes:
-
Teaching Children to Recognize Their Own Needs: We focus on helping children identify the signs that they need to use the bathroom. This involves understanding their body signals and learning how to respond to them.
-
Encouraging Independence: The goal is for your child to eventually be able to use the bathroom independently, without the need for constant reminders. Through guided practice, your child will learn how to request to go to the bathroom and how to manage the task on their own.
-
Reinforcing Success: The 36-hour program ensures that children not only learn the steps of toileting but also have plenty of opportunities to practice and reinforce their new skills. Consistent practice is key in building confidence and competence. Reinforcement is essential for each child, as it teaches them to carry those successes forward into their daily life.
-
Support for Caregivers: As any program, toilet training is a team effort, and we believe in providing support not only for the children but also for their caregivers. We provide clear guidelines on how caregivers can reinforce the learned skills at home, ensuring that progress continues outside of our sessions. Parental involvement in the success of their learner can do wonders for reinforcing these important skills.
Routine Transformation
An experience BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) oversees each toilet training session, while the RBTs (Registered Behavior Technicians) provide instruction to your child. The signs that your child is succeeding once in their program include:
-
Independence with Dressing Themselves: If your child is starting to dress themselves, then this is a positive sign that they may be ready to take on the responsibility of using the bathroom independently.
-
Ability to Hold Bladder for an Hour: Children should be able to hold their bladder for an hour as a result of the learned experiences in our Toilet Training program.
-
Willingness to Stay on the Toilet for Two Minutes: Tolerance for sitting on the toilet for a few minutes is another important sign. It shows that your child is becoming comfortable with the process and is ready to engage in it.
-
Acceptance of Fluids Without Refusal: If your child is drinking fluids without refusal, it shows they are likely ready for the routine of going to the bathroom regularly.
