Behavioral Consulting works with children with autism and related disorders. Most of our clients have skill deficits in areas such as language/communication, self-help skills, social skills, play skills, and academic skills. Although our Verbal Behavior Program addresses each of these areas, a more intensive academic curriculum was required to assist our clients in reaching their full potential whether they are in an inclusive or mainstream academic setting.
Therefore, BCOTB has purchased a group of Direct Instruction Materials, grades K-2, in the areas of Mathematics, Reading, and Language. Direct Instruction (DI) is a model for teaching that emphasizes well-developed and carefully planned lessons designed around small learning increments and clearly defined and prescribed teaching tasks. It is based on the theory that clear instruction eliminating misinterpretations can greatly improve and accelerate learning (http://www.nifdi.org/15/about-di).
DI provides behaviorally-based academic instruction that requires a great deal of active student responding which, through research, has been proven to increase academic performance. The program is taught in a 1:1 setting with a trained behavior therapist/behavior analyst. In addition, data is collected on the child’s progress in order to monitor the child’s skill acqusition and to make changes to the teaching, when necessary.
